Lissa Townsend Rodgers rants...
Scream Real Loud!

Go ahead, turn this mother out! The Blues Explosion cuts loose.
I've been to many a Lounge Lizards gig in my time and I've always been a little perplexed by the audience. Not by the mix of tidy yuppies, paunchy jazz aficionados, gaunt hipsters, and giggling Japanese girls--that makes perfect sense. No, what makes me wonder is the audience's reverent hush directed toward such an irreverent band. I mean, they stand up there and yell when they get into it, so why not us?

More on this, the Soulsonic Force, and the Blues Explosion...

Bite Me:
Sound Sample of the Week

Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company resurrect with "Live at Winterland '68"(Columbia), a snapshot of a band on the verge of blowing up. The music isn't as bombastic, and Janis' voice is smoother and her delivery more relaxed than in later recordings. Particularly engaging is "Bye Bye Baby"--in which she lets it flow in a near-jazz style as the band backs her up with a subtle Latin shuffle and some closing blues guitar pyrotechnics.

Take a listen...

Directions for Deployment

I know, I know, you're looking over there on the right and cussing me out for not recommending a country/funk/Latin/Celtic/whatever kind of show you're looking for. Fear not! In the column on your left there is a whole list of categories: click on one and a rundown of venues featuring folk/jazz/reggae/whatever will magically appear, followed by a list of individual gigs falling under that criteria. If you're seeking a specific venue or performer, enter the name in the little box and our crack team of tiny technogremlins will scuttle down into the database and retrieve it for you. Now, ain't that easy?
